Rowardennan and the Local Area

  • What does the name 'Rowardennan' mean?

    'Penisula at St. Adamnán’s hill'


    The name 'Rowardennan' is of Gaelic origin. 'Rubha'  means penisula, 'ard'  means hill (refering to Ben Lomond), and 'ennan' is the reduction of Adamnán


  • Is Rowardennan in the Highlands?

    Geographically, yes


    The border between the Highlands and the Lowlands is at the south end of Loch Lomond and cuts through Balmaha. The Highland fault is a geographic and cultural boudry running from the south-west to the north-east of Scotland

  • Is there a shop?

    Yes


    The hotel runs a small shop, selling a selection of snacks, drinks, supplies, and homemade sandwiches

  • Is there a postbox?

    Yes


    There is a postbox in the wall of the hotel building, left of the Clansman front door

  • What is the history of the hotel?

    The building was established as an inn in 1696, making it a whole 80 years older than the United States of America. However, the building was present before then, acting as a farmhouse. It has been an active tourist destination as far back as 1850, when steamboats would regularly arrive to bring people to Ben Lomond 

  • What is a midge?

    Small insects known for the reign of terror they inflict throughout the Scottish summer


    Midges are particularly active at dawn, dusk, and near bodies of water. They can be deterred by candles and sprays, and kept at bay with nets

  • What is a midge globe?

    A decorative souvenir unique to the Rowardennan Hotel


    The peaceful beauty of a snow globe has been reimagnined as a West Highland Way walker attacked by thousands of tiny midges. The globes are sold in the memory of their inventor - Fraser Allison

  • Where can I buy a midge globe?

    Midge globes are available for purchase through the online shop on our website.


    You can also find them in our physical shop, Amazon, and Etsy

  • Is fishing allowed?

    Yes


    A permit is required and specific rules will be outlined in this permit. More information is available on the Loch Lomond National Park website

  • How do I book the sauna?

    The 'Hot Tottie' website


    The sauna must be booked in advance and directly with Hot Tottie

  • What is the 'Country Code'?

    Officially know as the ‘Scottish Outdoor Access Code’, this is a list of responsibilities for all those who visit, live in, or pass through Scotland's countryside.

    There are three main rules:

    • Respecting the interests of other people
    • Caring for the environment
    • Taking responsibility for your own actions

Hotel

  • What time is check in/out?

    Check in from 3pm for the hotel, and from 4pm for the lodges


    Check out is by 10am

  • Can I bring a baby?

    Yes


    Cots are available free of charge. Please be aware that for health and safety reasons, the cots do not come with any bedding

  • Does the building have a lift?

    No


    The hotel has three floors and the upper floors are accessible by staircase only

  • Do the rooms have tea and coffee making facilities?

    Yes


    Each room is provided with a kettle, teabags, coffee sachets, sugars, sweetener, cups, and stirrers

  • Will you be open this winter (October to March)?

    Please contact the hotel


    A decision will be made by around September as to whether or not we will be open over winter


    The lodges are always available, for a self-catering stay 

  • What is the minimum age to book a room or lodge?

    18

  • How many rooms does the hotel have?

    24


    The room numbers go up to 26 as there is no room 9 or room 13

  • Can I make specific requests for my room?

    Yes, subject to availability


    If you would prefer a room with a bath, on the ground floor etc. please contact the hotel and we will do our best to accomodate you

  • Where do I collect my bags?

    From our luggage storage building


    If you have arranged to have luggage delivered to the hotel by a transfer company, they will be in our luggage storage building. Information on the location and access code will be provided by reception at check in

  • Do the hotel rooms have Wi-Fi?

    Yes


    There is a guest network, and access is free of charge. Log in information can be found in the room welcome books

  • Do you have any accessible rooms?

    Yes, we have one


    There is a triple ensuite room on the ground floor of the hotel building, which is wheelchair accessible

  • Are you hiring?

    The hotel operates on a seasonal basis and we are always open to hearing from those interested in a position with us. Please email us a copy of your CV and let us know which role you would like to apply for

  • Can I bring a dog?

    Yes, for a fee


    The hotel is dog friendly, however there is a fee charged per dog per night, due to the additional cleaning required after check out. When making a booking through our website, please include the number of dogs staying in each room booked

  • What is an 'Off-Suite' room?

    The hotel has two twin 'off-suite' rooms. As they are located in the oldest part of the building, the bathroom is not directly attached to the bedroom


    Instead, the bathroom is a separate room in the hotel corridor. At check in you will receive two keys on your set - one being for the bedroom and the other for the bathroom


    The bathroom is private, it is not shared with guests from any other bedroom

  • Is smoking permitted?

    No


    There is strictly no smoking allowed indoors in any part of the hotel. There are several smoking areas around the outside of the building

  • Do the rooms have a hairdryer and iron?

    Every room is provided with a hairdryer


    The iron is available from reception upon request

  • What is your cancellation policy?

    Our current cancellation policy can be viewed through our booking engine before and after any reservation is finalised


    A copy will be provided in the confirmation email

Lodges

  • Where do I check in?

    At the hotel's reception


    This only applies to the lodges directly managed by the hotel - 23, 37, 38, and 40

  • Where can I book one of the hotel's lodges?

    Through our website

  • Is breakfast included?

    For stays booked on a 'Bed and Breakfast' rate - yes


    For stays booked on a 'Self-Catering' rate - no. Depending on the time of year, you may be able to come into the hotel for a paid breakfast

Food and Drink

  • Do you offer packed lunches?

    No


    The hotel no longer offers packed lunches as we now have a small shop on site. The shop sells a variety of snacks, drinks, supplies, and homemade sandwiches


    In the low season when the shop is closed, packed lunches can be made upon request

  • Is breakfast available to non-residents?

    Yes


    Non-residents are welcome to come in for breakfast. Payment can be made either the night before or on the day


    Please try to make a reservation in advance as hotel guests are prioritised

  • Are children allowed?

    Yes


    Children of all ages are welcome at the Clansman. We have an outdoor play area, kids menu, colouring pages, highchairs, and there is a baby changing table in the ladies toilets

  • What payment methods are accepted?

    Cash and all major cards (except for American Express)

  • Do I need a dinner reservation?

    We highly recommend making a reservation in advance in order to avoid disappointment


    These can be made under the 'Restaurant Bookings' tab. For tables of thirteen people or more, please contact the hotel directly


    Walk ins are also welcome, subject to availability

  • What time is breakfast served?

    7am to 9am from April to September


    8am to 9:30am in March and October


    Please be aware that certain circumstances may cause these breakfast times to change


    We also recommend making a reservation in advance. These can be made under the 'Restaurant Bookings' tab

  • Are dogs allowed?

    Yes


    Water bowls and dog treats are available from the bar. We kindly request that dogs are kept on a lead and do not sit on the furniture

  • Can food be ordered for take-away?

    Yes


    Most of the items on our menus are available for takeaway. Orders are taken in person at the bar

  • Do you have vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free options?

    Yes


    We have several options available for those who are vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free. Each menu item is marked accordingly and the menus are available to view on our website

  • Is smoking allowed?

    No


    There is strictly no smoking allowed indoors in any part of the hotel. There are several smoking areas around the outside of the building

  • Where can I view the current menus?

  • What sports channels do you have?

    The Clansman has two TVs, and access to both Sky Sports and TNT

West Highland Way

  • How long does it take?

    Typically 5 to 7 days


    The record (on foot) is 13 hours, 14 minutes, and 8 seconds!

  • Can luggage be transported between accommodation stops?

    Yes


    A luggage transfer service is available from several companies - such as AMS


    As the hotel has limited luggage storage space, we are only able to accept luggage for our own guests

  • How do I get the boat over to Ardlui?

    By raising the flag at Ardleish


    The boat comes once an hour, but only if the flag is raised. The service is only available during the summer

  • What's the best time of year to walk the Way?

    March to October


    Whilst there are those who complete the West Highland Way during winter months, it is generally recommended to go during the Scottish walking season

  • What is the difference between the high road and the low road?

    The West Highland Way splits in two, just after Ptarmagin Lodge, and runs parrallel for around three miles before recombining. These two paths are referred to as the 'low road' and the 'high road'


    The 'low road' is closer to the loch and is a more technically challenging path


    The 'high road' is a wider, more defined path

  • How far in advance should accomodation be booked?

    As far as possible, especially for the busier months (May and September)


  • Is there camping available at Rowardennan?

    There is stritly no camping permitted on the hotel's grounds


    Rowardennan is within the Loch Lomond National Park's camping restriction zone. The restriction is in place from March to September and prohibits any unauthorised camping. A permit must be acquired from the Park





Ben Lomond

  • How long does it take?

    Around 4 to 6 hours for a complete trip


    This is also dependent on ability, weather conditions, etc.

  • Where do the route paths start?

    The 'main path' splits from the road at the Ben Lomond car park public toilets


    The 'Ptarmagin ridge' splits from the road just after the bridge (approx. 1 mile north of the hotel) 

  • How many routes are there to the summit?

    Two


    The wider, more accessible main path, and the rocky scramble across the Ptarmigan ridge

  • How far does the view from the summit reach?

    Approx. 40 miles


    Landmarks visible from the summit include Ben Nevis and Goat Fell on Arran

Transport

  • What transport options are there in and around Rowardennan?

    Unfortunately, there is currently no public transport in Rowardennan, with the nearest bus link six miles south in Balmaha

  • Where does the Rowardennan waterbus leave from?

    From the Rowardennan Youth Hostel Pier

  • What options are there for skipping the next day of walking the West Highland Way?

    GOING NORTH

    • Inversnaid -Taxi
    • Inverarnan - Taxi, or a taxi to Balloch and then a bus
    • Ardlui - Taxi, or a taxi to Balloch and then a bus, or a taxi to Dumbarton Central and then the train
    • Crianlarich - Taxi, or a taxi to Balloch and then a bus, or a taxi to Dumbarton Central and then the train

    GOING SOUTH

    • Balmaha - Taxi
    • Drymen -Taxi, or taxi to Balmaha and then the bus

  • Where can boats be hired?

    Boats are available to hire from Loch Lomond Leisure at their Luss and Balloch locations

  • Where can bikes be hired?

    Bikes are available to hire from Loch Lomond Leisure at their Balloch location

  • Does the hotel have parking?

    Yes


    The hotel has a car park at the south end of the building. Spaces are not reserved and are available on a first come, first served basis


    Hotel guests must register any vehicles with reception at check in


    There is a tablet in the Clansman Bar for customers to register. This must be done within 10 minutes of arrival


    Those who are neither hotel guests or customers must pay at machine (coins only) within 10 minutes of arrival

  • Where is the nearest fuel station?

    The three nearest fuel stations are in:

    • Gartocharn (15 miles)
    • Buchlyvie (18 miles)
    • Balfron (18 miles)
